Signalling
Appropriate signals for stopping, turning, changing lanes and decelerating
ORS > Vehicle Code > Signalling > 811.395
this statute establishes appropriate signals for use when signals are required while stopping, turning, changing lanes or suddenly decelerating a vehicle. It doesn't authorize using hand & arm signals when signal lights are required per 811.405 (failure to signal with lights). The vehicle lighting equipment described are those established per 816.100 (brake lights - defined) & 816.120 (turn signals - defined). Appropriate signals are as follows:
(1) to indicate a left turn either:
(a) hand & arm extended horizontally from the vehicle's left side
(b) activation of the the vehicle's left front & rear turn signal lights
(2) to indicate a right turn either:
(a) hand & arm extended upward from the vehicle's left side. A bicyclist may extend their right hand & arm horizontally
(b) activate the vehicle's right front and rear turn signal lights
(3) To indicate a stop or a speed decrease either:
(a) hand & arm extended downward from vehicle's left side of the vehicle
(b) Activate of the vehicle's brake lights
(4) lane change by activating the vehicle's front & rear turn signal lights on the side where the lane change is being made.
Failure to signal with lights
ORS > Vehicle Code > Signalling > 811.405
(1) operates a vehicle and doesn't use the vehicle's lighting equipment described per 811.395 (appropriate signals for stopping, turning, changing lanes and decelerating) to signal turning, changing lanes, stopping or suddenly decelerating under any of the following:
(a) during limited visibility conditions.
(b) when operating a vehicle or combination of vehicles where the distance from the center of the top of the steering post to the left outside limit of the vehicle's body, cab or load is more than 24in
(c) when operating a vehicle or combination of vehicles where the distance from the center of the top of the steering post to the rear limit of the body or load is more than 14ft
(2) moped or bicycle riders without lighting equipment must use the appropriate hand & arm signals per 811.395 (appropriate signals for stopping, turning, changing lanes and decelerating) without violation of this statute.
Failure to use appropriate signal for turn, lane change, stop or exit from roundabout
ORS > Vehicle Code > Signalling > 811.400
(1) doesn't make the appropriate signal per 811.395 (appropriate signals for stopping, turning, changing lanes and decelerating) by using signal lights or hand signals & operating a vehicle that's:
(a) turning, changing lanes, stopping or suddenly decelerating OR
(b) exiting from any position within a roundabout.
(2) this statute does not authorize using only hand signals when using signal lights is required per 811.405 (failure to signal with lights)
Unlawful use of lights to signal for passing
ORS > Vehicle Code > Signalling > 811.390
(1) operates a vehicle & flashes any lights as a courtesy or "do pass" signal to other drivers approaching from the rear
