Registration & Title
Failure to carry registration card
ORS > Vehicle Code > Registration & Title > 803.505
(1) it's a violation of this statute if the owner of a vehicle registered in Oregon doesn't keep the registration card in the vehicle in a manner & place that makes it available for LE inspection upon request
(2)(a) the owner of a commercial vehicle may use a photocopy of the registration card
(b) a camper owner must keep the registration card in the transporting vehicle
(c) snowmobile: registration card or certificate must be in a place readily accessible whether or not the snowmobile is in operation
Failure to display out-of-state plates
ORS > Vehicle Code > Registration & Title > 803.545
(1) A person commits the offense of failure to display plates on an out-of-state vehicle if the person operates a vehicle that is registered in any jurisdiction other than this state and the person does not display the registration plates assigned to and furnished for the vehicle by the registering jurisdiction:
(a) For the current registration period in that jurisdiction AND
(b) Substantially as provided under 803.540 (failure to display plates) for vehicles that are registered by this state.
(2) this statute does not allow the display of out-of-state registration plates on a vehicle when the vehicle is required to be registered in this state per 803.325 (Purchase and use of out-of-state registered vehicle)
Failure to display plates
ORS > Vehicle Code > Registration & Title > 803.540
(1) operate on highway any vehicle or camper assigned registration plates by state & plates displayed in way violating:
(a) 1 plate required: must be displayed on vehicle rear (camper, moped, motorcycle, trailer, antique vehicle)
(b) 2 plates required: must be displayed on vehicle's front & rear
(c) must be in plain view so it can be read easily by public
(d) must not be any plate not entitling holder to operate the vehicle on highways
Failure to register
ORS > Vehicle Code > Registration & Title > 803.300
(1) it's a violation of this statute if someone owns a vehicle in Oregon & doesn't register vehicle in the state
vehicles must be registered within 30 days of becoming a resident of Oregon. 803.305 (Exemptions from general registration requirements)
(2) this statute applies to out-of-state corporations owning, operating or maintaining a place of business in Oregon with regard to vehicles that are used by the corporation doing business here
(3) exemptions from this statute are established in 803.305 (Exemptions from general registration requirements)
Failure to renew registration
ORS > Vehicle Code > Registration & Title > 803.455
(1) it's a violation of this statute if the registration period for a vehicle registered in a person's name expires & they don't pay the required renewal fee to renew it
(2) this statute doesn't apply to vehicles no longer required or qualified to be registered in Oregon when the vehicle's registration expires
Forging, altering or unlawfully producing or using title or registration
ORS > Vehicle Code > Registration & Title > 803.230
(1) it's a violation of this statute to:
(a) alter or forge or cause to be altered or forged any certificate of title, certificate of registration or assignment thereof issued by DOT
(b) hold or use certificate of title, certificate of registration or assignment thereof issued by the department knowing the certificate or assignment has been altered or forged
(c) unless authorized by the department, print or produce or cause to be printed or produced any certificate of title, certificate of registration or any assignment thereof required by the department
(d) hold or use any certificate of title, certificate of registration or assignment thereof required by the department knowing that it has been printed or produced without authority from the department.
Illegal alteration or display of plates
ORS > Vehicle Code > Registration & Title > 803.550
(a) illegally alters registration plate per (2)
(b) illegally displays registration plate per (3)
(c) operates any vehicle with illegally altered, displayed plates
(d) owns & causes or permits a vehicle to illegally display a plate or display illegally altered plate
(2) illegal alteration: plate altered, modified, covered or obscured in any way including:
(a) any change of color, configuration, numbers, letters or material of plate
(b) any material or covering, other than a frame or plate holder, placed on, over or in front of the plate altering appearance of plate
(c) any frame or plate holder that obscures the numbers, letters or registration stickers making them unreadable
(3) illegal display:
(a) displayed on a different vehicle that issue vehicle OR
(b) display stickers with an expiration date different from date shown on the vehicle registration records of DOT
Improper display of registration stickers
ORS > Vehicle Code > Registration & Title > 803.560
(1) owns/drives vehicle & registration stickers are:
(a) not displayed as required by DOT OR
(b) displayed after registration period shown on stickers
(2) not a violation if proof of registration, but hasn't yet received new stickers. Proof of registration is valid 30 days from date of issue
Permitting unlawful operation of unregistered vehicle
ORS > Vehicle Code > Registration & Title > 803.320
(1) suspect authorizes or knowingly allows a motor vehicle that they own or that is under their control to be driven by anyone when the vehicle is not registered as required by law
