Equipment - Lighting
Auxiliary lights - defined

Brake lights - defined

(1) are on rear of vehicle. If more than one (1) light required (see 816.320) at least one is placed on each side of vehicle's rear
(3) emit a red light...
(4) emit a steady light
(5) plainly visible, capable of being seen & distinguishable from 500ft to the rear in normal daylight
(6) mounted, as far as practicable, to reduce hazard of being obscured by debris thrown by wheels.
(7) don't project a glaring/dazzling light
(8) may be part of taillight.
(9) activate when braking
(11) on motorcycle may flash intermittently as long as they don't override rear turn signal function.
End load lights - defined

(1) must be red in color
(2) must be either a lighted light or lantern
(3) must be placed at the extreme rear end of a load
(4) must be plainly visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the sides and rear of the vehicle
Exemptions from lighting equipment requirements
ORS > Vehicle Code > Equipment - Lighting > 816.310
this statute establishes exemptions from 816.040 to 816.300 (operation with nonstandard lighting equipment). These exemptions are in addition those in 801.026 (General exemptions). The exemptions established under this statute are partial or complete as described in the following:
(1) 816.040 (Lighting equipment standards) to 816.300 (operation with nonstandard lighting equipment) will not be construed to prohibit the use of additional parts & accessories on any vehicle not inconsistent with the provisions of those statutes
(2) lighting equipment used on vehicles of special interest that are registered under 805.020 (Special interest vehicles) are considered in compliance with 816.040 (Lighting equipment standards) to 816.300 (operation with nonstandard lighting equipment) if the equipment is original manufacturerÂ’s equipment and accessories, or their equivalent and if the equipment is maintained in safe operating condition.
(a) road machinery
(b) road rollers
(c) farm tractors
(d) antique vehicles maintained as collector items & used for exhibitions, parades, club activities & similar uses, but not used to primarily transport persons or property.
(4) on any combination of vehicles, only the lighting equipment on the rearmost vehicle in the combination of vehicles need be visible from distances specified under 816.040 (Lighting equipment standards) to 816.290 (end load lights - defined) for lighting equipment on the rear of vehicles.
(5) lighting equipment on bicycles will meet the requirements established for such equipment under 815.280 (violation of bicycle equipment requirements)
(6) parked or stopped vehicles are not required to display parking lights if the highway's road authority provides by ordinance or resolution that states no lights need to be displayed on a vehicle parked on the highway in accordance with legal parking regulations where there's sufficient light for any person or object to be clearly discernible within 500ft from the highway
(6) vehicle lighting equipment requirements for ambulances and emergency vehicles are established in 820.350 (Ambulance warning lights)
(7) lighting equipment on electric personal assistive mobility devices must meet the requirements established in 815.284 (Violation of electric personal assistive mobility device equipment requirements)
Exemptions from requirements for use of lights

this statute establishes exemptions from 811.515 (when lights must be displayed) & 811.520 (unlawful use or failure to use lights). These are in addition to exemptions in 801.026 (General exemptions) as follows:
(1) 811.515 (when lights must be displayed) & 811.520 (unlawful use or failure to use lights) don't prohibit the use of additional parts & accessories on any vehicle not inconsistent with the provisions of those statutes.
(2) except for the provisions relating to exempt-vehicle safety lighting equipment, 811.515 (when lights must be displayed) & 811.520 (unlawful use or failure to use lights) don't apply to:
(a) road machinery
(b) road rollers
(c) farm tractors
(d) antique vehicles maintained as collector items & used for exhibitions, parades, club activities & similar uses, but not used to primarily transport persons or property.
(3) whenever motor vehicles & other vehicles are operated in combination when lights are required, any lighting equipment, except the taillight - which due to its location on a vehicle would be obscured by another vehicle in the combination - need not be lighted. It's still required that clearance lights be lit on the front of the foremost vehicle required to have clearance lights and all lights be lit on the rear of the rearmost vehicle in the combination.
(4) lighting equipment on bicycles must be lit as per 815.280 (violation of bicycle equipment requirements)
(5) parked or stopped vehicles are not required to display parking lights if the highway's road authority provides by ordinance or resolution that states no lights need to be displayed on a vehicle parked on the highway in accordance with legal parking regulations where there's sufficient light for any person or object to be clearly discernible within 500ft from the highway
(6) nothing under811.515 (when lights must be displayed) & 811.520 (unlawful use or failure to use lights) limits the ability to use the following lights with any other lights during day or night:
(a) public vehicle warning lights
(b) pilot vehicle warning lights
(c) tow vehicle warning lights
(d) police lights
(e) warning lights on vehicles at a scene of an actual or potential release of hazardous materials per 816.280 (warning lights - defined)
(f) warning lights on vehicles used by medical examiners to reach the scene of an accident or of a death investigation per 816.280 (warning lights - defined)
(g) commercial vehicle warning lights.
(8) lighting equipment requirements for electric personal assistive mobility devices are described in 815.284 (Violation of electric personal assistive mobility device equipment requirements)
Headlights - defined
ORS > Vehicle Code > Equipment - Lighting > 816.050
(1) On vehicles requiring two (2) or more lights, lights must be equally distributed on each side of vehicle's front
(2) lights must emit a continuous light
(a) Motorcycles/mopeds high beam can modulate between a higher & lower brightness at 200-280 pulses/min
(3) must show a white light
(4) must shine forward
(7) must be aimed to comply with DOT rules. If single beam & is not supplemented by auxiliary lights, must be aimed so on an unloaded vehicle none of the high intensity part of light projects more than 5in below center of lamp at 25ft ahead, or more than 42in above the level on which vehicle stands at 75ft ahead
(8) intensity of single beam headlights must be sufficient to reveal people & vehicles on a street/highway 200ft or more ahead of vehicle
(11) single beam lights not supplemented by auxiliary lights are allowed instead of multi beam lights only if they comply with (7) & (8) above
Lighting equipment required for motor vehicles

(1) motor vehicles shall be equipped with:
(a) two (2) headlights. Moped or motorcycle equipped with one or more
(b) two (2) tail lights. Motorcycle requires 1
(d) two (2) brake lights. Moped/motorcycle require 1
(2) trailers will be equipped with:
(a) two (2) tail lights
(c) two (2) brake lights
(e) two (2) rear reflectors
(3) in addition the requirements of (1) the following will be equipped with: forward & rear side reflectors & side marker lights on each side of the vehicle:
(c) Vehicles used in transportation of persons for hire by a nonprofit entity
(d) A bus being operated for transporting children to and from religious services or an activity or function authorized by the religious organization
(f) Motor trucks with a registration weight in excess of 8,000 pounds
Operation with nonstandard lighting equipment

(1) it's a violation of this statute to do any of the following:
(a) drive or move on any highway any vehicle equipped with lighting equipment described under 816.040 to 816.290 (end load lights - defined) that doesn't meet the standards required for the equipment under those statutes
(b) own a vehicle or combination of vehicles & causes or knowingly permits (a) above
(2) The application of this section is subject to the exemptions from this section established under 816.310 (exemptions from lighting equipment requirements)
Operation without required lighting equipment

Parking lights - defined

Reflectors - defined

(1)(a) rear & rearward side red
(b) forward side & intermediate side amber
(2)(a) rear reflectors must be mounted on rear of vehicle. If more than one (1) reflector is required then at least 1 reflector is mounted on either side of the rear...
(b) forward side reflectors are mounted on side near front
(c) intermediate side reflectors are mounted on side at or near the midpoint between forward & rear side reflectors
(d) rear side reflectors are mounted on side near rear
(3) are mounted at height more than 15in & less than 60in above ground
(4) are mounted & maintained to be visible at night from 500ft to 50ft directly in front of a vehicle with its high-beams on
(5) reflected colors: sides = amber, rear = red
(6) required reflectors mounted, as far as practicable, to reduce hazard of being obscured by debris thrown by wheels.
(11) rears may be separate or incorporated with 816.080 (taillights - defined)

(2)(a) front turn signals light to front

(4) must be understandable in normal sunlight & 500ft or more at night.
Unlawful use or failure to use lights

Warning lights - defined
ORS > Vehicle Code > Equipment - Lighting > 816.280
(1) this statute establishes standards for different types of warning lights. The following are requirements for warning lights:
(a) public vehicle, pilot vehicle & commercial vehicle warning lights will be amber.
(b) tow vehicle warning lights may be amber or red
(c) weighmaster & motor carrier enforcement officer warning lights must be red.
(d) warning lights on vehicles engaged in removing, containing or cleaning up of hazardous materials releases, & vehicles at the scene of potential hazardous materials releases, may be red or amber.
(e) warning lights on medical examiner vehicles used to reach the scene of an accident or death investigation may be red.
(2) warning lights must provide an intermittent light that may be revolving, flashing or any other type providing an intermittent light
(3) all warning lights must be visible from a distance 500ft or more under normal nighttime atmospheric conditions
When lights must be displayed

(1) during limited visibility conditions required lighting must be switched on when on a highway
(2) Parking lights & lights other than clearance, identification & marker lights mounted on vehicle's front & designed to be lit primarily when the vehicle is parked must be off when driving on a highway during limited visibility conditions except:
(a) when the lights are being used as turn signals OR
(b) the headlights are on at the same time.
(3) during limited visibility conditions attended/unattended vehicle parked/stopped on roadway or shoulder must have on parking lights
(6) during limited visibility conditions must use a distribution of light or composite beam directed sufficiently high & with enough intensity to reveal people & vehicles on the highway at a safe distance in advance of the vehicle. Not complying with the following is a violation:
(a) When approaching an oncoming vehicle within 500 ft, must use a distribution of light or composite beam aimed so that the glaring rays don't projected into the eyes of the oncoming driver. low beams are at all times
(b) Except when overtaking or passing, when following another vehicle within 350 ft to its rear must use the low beams headlights
(7) only 4 or fewer lights mounted on a vehicle's front & each having a beam intensity greater than 300 candlepower can be on at the same time when on a highway
(8)(a) a light, other than a headlight, with beam intensity greater than 300 candlepower must not be operated on a vehicle
(A) Unless beam is directed so that no part of it's high intensity portion strikes the level of roadway on which the vehicle stands at a distance greater than 75 ft from the vehicle OR
(B) Except as provided in (b) below. when using the low beams is required per (6) above
(b) up to 2 lights other than and no more intense than the headlight low beam can be lighted on a motorcycle. A motorcycle may not be operated with more than two lights, other than headlights, under this paragraph.
(9) Spotlights: must be off when approaching another vehicle unless it's aimed & used so that no part of the beam's high-intensity portion is aimed more than 100 ft in front of the vehicle to the left of the imaginary line extending forward from the extreme left side of the vehicle to which it's mounted
(10) Auxiliary lights: mounted greater than 54in must be off when on a highway
(11) can't use back-up lights when going forward.
(17) headlights on parked vehicle must be dimmed.
